In filming and editing music videos, I have developed a process that I believe ensures the best results as to the artist’s liking. I first make a printout of all of the lyrics in a song allowing space for notes on the side, and describe the visual shot that will appear as each lyric is sung. I then bring that list with my ideas to the artist and collaborate with him or her to edit the shots based on the tone of the song and the visual story the artist might want to tell with it. After we come to a final draft of the shot list, we may make a story board of the shots, actually drawing out the images that will show up on screen in order to satisfy the artist’s desires for what the video will communicate. Once this is finished, we discuss locations, camera set ups and angles, and then begin shooting. The artist may or may not wish to be included in the editing process, but for the majority of shots, I will send a quick snippet of them, when complete, to allow for any adjustments the artist would like to make. After the entire video is compiled and edited, I meet with the artist again to show them the video and allow them to upload it to their website(s) and keep a copy of the file for themselves.
